Barbara Mercer was born in October 1934 to Milliard and Mamie Yonce in Moultrie, Georgia. She was the youngest of six children. Staying in the area, Barbara met and married David “Max” Mercer in 1962. Max worked as a U.S.D.A meat inspector. Together, the couple raised four daughters, Cindy, Donna, Kim and Diana. When her daughters were grown, Barbara passed the exam to become a U.S.D.A Poultry Inspector, joining Max in his career. It was one of her proudest moments and she loved her job.
While Barbara excelled at her job, she is most known for being a loving mom who always sought to make holidays special. Barbara would go all out in decorating and cooking up holiday meals that her family still talks about. Now having six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Barbara is also famous for her Sunday meals, her beautiful garden and her cross-stitch. Barbara loved to spend her free time gardening and bird watching, and she still enjoys being out in nature whenever possible.
After Max passed away in 2017, after a 55-year marriage, Barbara became a resident at Legacy Village at Park Regency. Barbara loves being involved in Legacy Village’s activities, especially playing bingo and going on drives in the country. When she is spending time alone, you can often find her listening to bluegrass or gospel music and working on a word search.
