Spring Refresh: Simple Ways To Welcome A New Season

It’s time to break out the pastel blouses and allergy meds, because winter is on its way out for the year. As spring approaches, with its colorful blooms and spirit of newness, we want to encourage our residents and families to take some time for a refresh.

We, at Legacy, know this can feel like a daunting task, but we have some pretty simple tips for families and our staff is ready to assist in any way. Our goal for all of our residents and their family members is to move into this new season with more space for joy and a little spring spruce up is just the ticket.

START WITH WHY –

When we begin to alter the living space of a loved one in any way, open communication is essential. By making sure to explain that a nice refresh is going to boost mood and spirits, as well as bring a new lightness to the space, we establish why we need to change it up. Small steps are important to this process. Instead of making big changes that may cause stress and confusion, pick a few small goals and work towards them one at a time.

WHAT CAN WE REFRESH?

Legacy facilities are known for their exceptional custodial services, so luckily, you can focus on more fun activities instead of the nitty-gritty of spring cleaning. Here are some ways we think a spring refresh can be practical for your family member.

An Infusion of Color

Spring is full of life and colors that can be mirrored indoors. Consider a new blanket or a comfy new decorative throw pillow in vibrant colors. Fresh flowers in a stem vase or a framed print of a garden hung on the wall can also bring the blossoms from the yard inside for more enjoyment.

Legacy Village of Cleveland knows the importance of seasonal decor for residents. “This year, we partnered with a local college that supplied us with Easter wreaths for each of our residents. Our residents are so proud to display these wreaths on their door as they welcome in Spring,” Executive Director, Christina Clevenger, shares.

Wardrobe Inventory

The simple task of removing any winter gear or ill-fitting garments from a wardrobe frees up space for better fitting and more spring-appropriate clothing. Picking out a new lightweight cardigan in a favorite color or texture is an effective way to boost confidence and comfort as the season transitions.

Amber Ralls from our Stanardsville location remarks, “Our facility is limited on storage, and closet space (like most). We encourage families to remove seasonal clothing that takes up a lot of space like winter coats and bulky sweaters. This helps with storage and assists memory care residents in making appropriate seasonal clothing selections.”

Remove Excess

Executive Director of Legacy Village of Jacksonville, Sasha Prough, likes to remind families, “Over time, our residents begin collecting an excess of various items. Families can assist them with decluttering and getting rid of any items in rooms that are no longer needed.”

Sometimes, this is easily done by just glancing at the room and finding items that are superfluous to the space. We also know that often, residents become attached to things that may seem to lack a purpose in our understanding, so continuing to include them in the small decisions helps avoid miscommunication or stress. Simply asking, “Is this important to you? Do you use this item regularly?” can help ease the overwhelm of decluttering.

REMEMBER

It is normal for this to feel a bit overwhelming. Organizing and decluttering living spaces can be emotionally draining, physically challenging, and often frustrating. Taking it in small steps, communicating at every opportunity, and remaining flexible are essential. The benefit of having a freshly cleaned and organized space will be worth it as we make room for more joy and more ease this spring.

As always, we are here to help and assist and support you in any way we can. Just let us know, and we will partner with you to make this as seamless as possible.
